Douglas J. Turner, MD

Dr. Turner is an associate professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and staff surgeon at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System in Baltimore.

Dr. Turner was a magna cum laude graduate of Bucknell University, earning a BS in chemistry, before going to medical school at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He received his general surgery residency training at the University of Michigan, where he also served as administrative chief resident.

Dr. Turner's clinical interests include thyroid and parathyroid surgery and treatment of hyperparathyroidism. He's also a very active researcher, dating back to John Hopkins, where he studied models of intestinal apoptosis in ischemia reperfusion models with Timothy G. Buchman, MD, PhD He also completed a research fellowship while at Michigan, and was awarded an NIH training fellowship in Surgical Gastroenterology under the supervision of Michael W. Mulholland, MD, PhD During this time he received both the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society Research Fellowship and the Milton J. Bryant/Margaret Arnold Research Award.

He continues his active interest in research with co-mentors Barbara L. Bass, MD and Jian-Ying Wang, MD, PhD His research investigates the molecular mechanisms through which intestinal epithelial migration is regulated after wounding. For this effort he has received the Frederick Plugge Faculty Research Award, the C. James Carrico Faculty Research Fellowship through the American College of Surgeons, and recently a Research Career Development Award through the VA. He has authored or co-authored 16 peer-reviewed scientific papers and chapters. He is also a member of the ACS, AAS, SAGES, SSAT and the AVAS.
