Justin Nelms, MD, chair of vascular surgery at UM BWMC, with endovascular suite's robotic imaging system.

The Vascular Center at UM BWMC provides advanced, comprehensive specialty care in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease.

In addition to consultation exam rooms, the center has a laboratory and endovascular suites that are equipped with the latest technology for exceptional care.

Diagnostic Testing for Vascular Disease

At the James R. Walker Vascular Laboratory, we perform various tests to look for vascular disease, including:

  • Angiography
  • Blood tests
  • Computed tomographic scanning (CT scan)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Ultrasound
  • Venography

Our testing is generally painless. The tests that are performed will depend on your medical history and risk factors.

Vascular Screening

As part of its commitment to the community, UM BWMC provides vascular screenings at no cost. Screenings are held at various locations throughout the year.

Vascular Treatment

With specialists, including vascular surgeons, we take a team approach to determining and performing treatments that are based on the severity of your vascular disease.

Sometimes, lifestyle changes and medications (e.g., blood thinners or clot-dissolving drugs) are prescribed. However, some cases call for surgery.

We have two endovascular suites where surgeons perform various modern procedures for treating vascular disease, some requiring fewer incisions than traditional surgery. Our hybrid operating room boasts a cutting-edge, versatile robotic imaging system that exposes patients to less radiation and allows surgeons to perform procedures with greater accuracy, resulting in safer patient outcomes.

Procedures we perform include:

  • Angioplasty (opens narrowed or blocked arteries)
  • Carotid endarterectomy (removes plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, improving blood flow and reducing stroke risk)
  • Dialysis access
  • Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR)
  • Thrombectomy (removes blood clots from arteries and veins)
  • Transcarotid arterial revascularization (TCAR), a minimally invasive surgery for treating carotid artery disease and preventing future strokes

The team at the Vascular Center at UM BWMC will help you decide which treatment options are best for you.
