Emergency Department
The emergency department at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) provides 24/7 care to patients of all ages for serious, life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
With a highly skilled and dedicated staff and over 70 fully equipped treatment areas, our emergency department, among the busiest in Maryland, serves more than 60,000 patients a year. Our care team always stands ready to meet the unique and immediate needs of patients in a fast-paced, unpredictable environment.

Location and Directions
What to Expect at the ER: Our priority is to treat each person in our emergency rooms as fully, safely and quickly as possible. We see patients based on how serious their conditions are. Patients are not seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about what to expect at the ER.
Emergency Stroke Care
We are designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) as a Primary Stroke Center for exceptional care leading to improved outcomes for stroke patients.
Emergency Cardiac Care
We are also designated by MIEMSS as a Cardiac Interventional Center for our rapid, lifesaving care during heart emergencies, most notably our ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) treatment.
Emergency Pediatric Care
Our care team includes pediatricians, child life specialists, nurses and others specially trained to treat children of all ages — from newborns to teenagers — for medical emergencies.
The UM BWMC pediatric emergency area is a child- and family-friendly environment with a comfortable waiting area and special resources for the unique medical needs of younger patients. We gear our care toward the physical as well as emotional well-being of young patients. Children requiring an overnight hospital stay are admitted to our secure inpatient pediatric unit.
Emergency Mental Health Care
Our dedicated area for emergency mental health treatment promotes a safe, supportive environment for patients experiencing a behavioral crisis.
Our behavioral health specialists, including psychiatrists, mental health associates and social workers, work with others on the emergency care team to develop a care plan that may include referrals to outpatient treatment (psychiatrists, therapists, etc.) or the partial hospitalization program and inpatient hospitalization as needed.
Emergency Care for Assault Victims
We provide compassionate, comprehensive emergency care to all victims of violence including, but not limited to, sexual assault/abuse, non-fatal strangulations, child abuse, elder abuse, domestic violence, and human trafficking.
Services include forensic nurse examinations and evidence collection, patient and family education (including information on support groups, counseling, shelters, and other resources for trauma victims), emotional support, referrals, and follow-up care.
