UMMC pain management physician smiles with a patient

Chronic pain is a complex syndrome that disrupts a person's physical, emotional, socioeconomic and spiritual well-being.

The University of Maryland's Pain Medicine (UM Pain) team is committed to improving the lives of people with chronic pain by using the most advanced treatments available, tailored to your specific pain point.

UM's Pain Management Specialists

Our team, led by board-certified anesthesiologists who specialize in pain management, includes experienced nurses, pain psychologists, and physical therapists.

As part of the Department of Anesthesiology at UM's School of Medicine, UM Pain embraces the mission not only to deliver comprehensive services in pain management but also to teach the next generation of pain specialists and medical professionals. Students, residents and fellows propel the cycle of learning and research, enabling us to deliver the most recent advances in pain management to our patients.

Chronic Pain Treatment

Because chronic pain is a complex matter, effective treatment means approaching from more than one direction. Our team provides:

  • Interventional therapies, such as nerve blocks and steroid injections
  • Optimal medication management
  • Physical therapy to improve function and strength
  • Psychological support to help patients learn coping strategies
