The University of Maryland / Sheppard Pratt residency program aims to help cultivate the next generation of leaders in the field.

We train clinicians of the utmost excellence, who are culturally sensitive, practice evidence-based psychiatry and are confident in working in multiple settings.

Through our recruitment efforts, we attract a diverse, highly qualified, and motivated resident group. Our program prepares residents to feel comfortable diagnosing and treating a wide range of psychiatric conditions.

Given our multiple training sites (including a university hospital, state hospitals, a Veterans Affairs hospital, and a stand-alone psychiatric facility – Sheppard Pratt), residents have opportunities to participate in the care of patients across the diagnostic spectrum, guided by nationally-recognized specialists.

After training, our residents emerge as highly competent professionals, going on to practice in a variety of settings, including fellowships, administration, private practice and academia/research.

Our department is committed to serving our patient population and being an active presence in the community. Our residents are strong advocates for the patients they serve and are invested in aiding with departmental efforts to enhance outreach.

In addition, the department maintains an ongoing commitment to resident and faculty wellness, as well as to furthering representation of minority groups and remaining active in social justice causes.
