John (JD) Odom, M.D.
Medical School: University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine
I was born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Growing up, my older sister, younger brother and I were consistently surrounded by animals. From horses to parrots to snakes my family has at one point or another kept them all as pets. Not surprisingly, both of my siblings would grow up and become veterinarians (well my brother is currently in vet school, in England). Both of my parents work for the arts department at a high-school back in Florida. My father builds sets for the theater department and my mother makes costumes and props for them.
Unlike the majority of my friends in undergrad, I did not go in as pre-med. My original plan involved getting a PhD and pursuing a career in the basic sciences. Around my third year of college, after an internship at a research lab, I realized that career path was not for me. Fortunately, one of my roommates at the time was pre-med and convinced me to study for the MCAT. I went on to study medicine at the University of South Florida (go Bulls).
At some point in med school I started going to the gym and that quickly became one of my main hobbies. At this point, I know more about professional bodybuilding and powerlifting than I do about basketball. That being said, sport’s medicine never really appealed to me. Instead, I will be pursuing a fellowship in genetics as I feel that the field offers great room for innovation and perhaps more importantly, it interests me.
