How to Apply
The UMMC General Surgery residency is a seven-year categorical residency. Residents will have five years of clinical and two years of required research (between PGY-2–PGY-3 clinical years).

Application Process
We accept applications through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) ONLY. Applications submitted via email will not be considered.
The program participates in the Supplemental ERAS application and is requesting that applicants submit this information with their ERAS application.
The application deadline is November 1, 2024.
Application Checklist
A completed application will include:
- Medical school transcript
- CV
- Three letters of recommendation
- Personal Statement
- Board score (only require STEP 1 scores during application process)
The program will send communications to the applicants via the ERAS system as applications are reviewed.
Interviews
For the 2024 ERAS application cycle, we will be conducting our interviews 100% virtually, with no in-person interview dates.
Specific dates will be offered to individual applicants after the decision has been made to grant an interview. Information regarding which video conferencing system we will be using will be sent out to those applicants selected for interviews.

International Graduates
All international graduates who require visa sponsorship must meet all requirements of the Educational Committee for Foreign Medical Graduates to be able to secure a J-1 Visa prior to starting residency. All candidates must become ECFMG certified by the start of their residency in order to be a part of the program.
We only accept US citizens and those with permanent resident status for categorical training positions.
Applicants with a J-1 Visa may apply to our preliminary internship position.
ECFMG Certification
ECFMG Eligible upon applying to our program (Have taken the USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CS, Step 2 CK). All candidates must become ECFMG certified by the start of their residency in order to be a part of the program.
