R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center

Course Description

In this clinical sub-internship, the student will be a working member of the team in the trauma and neurological ICUs at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center. During the rotation the student will learn about the clinical evaluation and management of various critical care problems including shock, heart failure, myocardial ischemia/infarction, respiratory failure, ARDS, renal failure, hepatic failure, GI bleeding, sepsis, multi-organ failure and ethical issues. The student will become familiar with techniques such as fluid resuscitation, transfusion therapy, vasoactive drug therapy, invasive hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, ventilator support, renal replacement therapy, antibiotic usage and blood gas analysis. Student activities are closely supervised by attending surgeons and fellows.
