At the University of Maryland Heart and Vascular Center, we believe the more you know about your heart the better.

We want you to be as informed as possible about your heart, treatment options and living a heart-healthy life.

Heart health is a bigger deal than you may know.

  • The first symptom of heart disease is often a heart attack or sudden death.
  • In the U.S., someone has a heart attack every 34 seconds.
  • About 600,000 die of heart disease in the U.S. every year – that’s 1 in every 4 deaths.

Heart Screenings at the UM Heart and Vascular Center

Undergoing regular heart screenings is one of the most effective ways you can help your heart. Starting in your 20s, you should undergo screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. Screenings are often no more invasive than a simple blood test.

If we detect an abnormality, such as high cholesterol, we can treat it aggressively before it becomes a problem. The earlier we treat heart-related conditions, the more successful the treatment. Learn more about heart screenings.
