The University of Maryland Center for Aortic Disease is a multidisciplinary center that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of chronic aortic disease and acute aortic emergencies. The Center provides early diagnosis, medical management, genetic screening and surgical care in elective and emergency situations for the most complex aortic conditions in a tertiary, quaternary setting.

Advancing Clinical Research Studies

The UM Center for Aortic Disease is a regional leader in conducting research studies and is routinely selected as an evaluation site for FDA approval in the latest technologies and innovative devices. It is currently the only center in Maryland participating in a clinical study to determine whether the GORE® TAG® Thoracic Branch Endoprosthesis (TBE) is safe and effective in treating lesions of the aortic arch and descending thoracic aorta.

The TBE study is a multicenter trial that looks at patients with all pathologies of the thoracic aorta, including aneurysms, dissections, penetrating ulcers, intramural hematomas, and traumatic transections. With this new device, the UM Center for Aortic Disease can offer patients an alternative, minimally-invasive treatment that decreases length of stay and recovery time.

Innovation in the OR

UM Center for Aortic Disease surgeons have advanced training in minimally invasive, hybrid and open procedures to treat complex aortic conditions, including specific expertise in treating aneurysms of the aortic arch. Hybrid approaches specifically enable surgeons to treat a condition with a single operation rather than a series of surgeries, or to treat conditions that are otherwise inoperable.
