Historically, pulmonary embolism carries significant morbidity and mortality. Directed by Rafael Cires-Drouet, Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the University of Maryland Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) provides a multidisciplinary approach and a “one phone call” solution for the treatment and management of sub-massive or massive pulmonary embolism.

Comprised of a highly specialized team of faculty-physician experts from critical care medicine, vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, vascular medicine and cardiology, PERT is designed to incorporate these expanded skill sets and advanced treatments not always readily available through standard emergency department referral patterns.

In the past five to ten years, there has been a revolution in advanced therapies for treatment of pulmonary embolism – many of which have demonstrated superior efficacy over anti-coagulation therapy. These advanced therapies wielded by surgeons, intensivists, heart failure specialists, and vascular medicine physicians provide a long-term solution for pulmonary embolism patients.
