OR Nurse Fellowship
The OR Nurse Fellowship is designed to prepare new nursing graduates and nurses who have no prior work experience in a perioperative setting to perform the roles of the registered nurse in the operating room. The program is tailored to meet each individual's specific training needs, based upon their prior educational and work experiences.
The program is offered three times a year: mid summer, fall, and winter. Applications for a position in the fellowship are accepted on line through the normal employment process. Applications may be submitted when the position for the “RN OR Nurse Fellowship” is posted and open. Positions are generally posted three months prior to the start of the next session.
The fellowship combines unit based training, a five day didactic Perioperative Nursing course, and simulation training in a lab setting prior to entering the Operating Room. Trainees are oriented to both the RN circulator and the scrub roles. After a dedicated period of time with primary preceptors in each role, the trainees will rotate through a core group of specialties to gain an understanding of a wide variety of the surgical procedures commonly performed at the Medical Center.
In addition, the program also includes an introduction to and rotations through other perioperative areas, including the Prep Center, Same Day Surgery, the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Endoscopy & Pulmonary labs, Central Sterile Processing and paired with an Anesthesia provider. All courses and workshops associated with this Fellowship are approved for continuing education credits. For more information, call 410-328-9881.
