Philosophy of the Psychiatry Residency Program
As a resident, you are united with your peers in the practice of medicine with the common purpose of improving the lives of your patients.
As such, you will be involved in collaborating with your peers across disciplines, in taking an active role in dictating the course of your training, and in informing the decision making process that guides the training program.
In exchange, we are committed to ensuring your progress as an individual, and we work hard to meet your needs as a resident.
The program belongs to you as much as to the faculty. You are afforded the opportunity to directly join work groups that impact your training, including the Residents' Council and the Residency Curriculum Committee ”“ a group that advises the Director of Residency Training.
The scope of career opportunity available to training psychiatrists is wide. In order to adequately prepare you we offer teaching sites and patient populations that are diverse, ensuring a wide range of experience. Residents train at a tertiary care academic medical center, a private psychiatric hospital, a Veterans Affairs hospital, a state psychiatric hospital and multiple community and mobile treatment sites. This diversity allows you the opportunity to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds as they present themselves to various levels of care, ranging from acute to outpatient. As a resident, you evaluate and treat patients with every major psychiatric disorder and disorders secondary to general medical conditions.
We foster a strong commitment to teaching. Senior faculty are involved in all aspects of the training experience. As a resident, you are essential to the teaching process. As such, we provide many opportunities for you to supervise students and serve as junior colleagues to your peers in this, and other specialties.
Guidance is crucial to your career. We provide excellent mentors and role models for residents in all areas. Supervisors on inpatient rotations include both ward administrators and outside faculty. All outpatient sites have on-site faculty to supervise, as well as outside supervisors. Many volunteer faculty are available for long-term psychotherapy supervision.
Our graduates have succeeded in academia, private practice, public settings, and research institutions. We believe this is a testament to the strong clinical training you will receive here. For the past few years the U.S. News and World Report has consistently ranked the Sheppard and Enoch Pratt hospital among the top hospitals for psychiatry. Furthermore, the University of Maryland School of Medicine is among the top national research institutions. In the fiscal year 2011, it ranked 26th among the 125 U.S. public and private medical schools in funding from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center is considered a world-class facility for completing basic and translational research into schizophrenia and related disorders.
