Letter from the Chair - Pediatric Residency
Thank you for your interest in our training programs in pediatrics. This is an exciting time to be a part of the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital and Department of Pediatrics community. Our department offers trainees a world class blend of high quality clinical care, cutting edge research and an innovative and personalized educational experience.
The University of Maryland Children’s Hospital expanded and will continue to expand in the future. In September of 2013 we opened our new 19 bed PICU and in the spring of this year we completed an expansion of our pediatric emergency department. We have also increased the capacity and acuity of our inpatient bed numbers and opened a new Pediatric Progressive care unit. We are anticipating the opening of our new 52 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that has been designed with an eye towards team dynamics and family centered care. At the same time that we have been expanding physically we have continued to grow our outstanding faculty, many of whom were former residents trained at the University of Maryland. Our faculty offers the full complement of subspecialty and primary care to the children of the Greater Baltimore and Mid-Atlantic Region.
The strength of this program is its size – we have all of the clinical and research training opportunities of some of the larger training programs in the region with the ability to truly personalize and tailor an educational experience to the individual residents. Our residents can pursue specialized tracks in advocacy, research and global health. The faculty have many opportunities to have one of one and small interactions with residents and provide extensive mentorship. Our residents continue to go on to make significant contributions to the field of pediatrics. In recent years they have gone on to join outstanding pediatric practices and matched in competitive fellowships programs across the country.
We look forward to you visit to the University of Maryland. Our goal is to build a foundation of learning and inquiry to allow you to become a leader in your chosen field. We believe that you will see something truly special going on here and will leave with a great sense of the pediatrics community that we have fostered.
