Research and scholarly work is a major priority of our program. The research opportunities at the University of Maryland are numerous, and all faculty in our Division are involved in some manner with either basic science or clinical research efforts. CCM Fellows are expected to complete a scholarly activity during their fellowship. Each fellow is required to complete a scholarly activity. If they are interested in conducting either basic science of clinical research, they may select a research mentor from within the Division (or from outside the Division if they so choose) and use their research/elective time to work on their respective projects.

  • Thermoimmunobiology: role of hyperthermia in regulating host defenses and heat shock responses

  • Sleep medicine: effects of chronic intermittent hypoxia on proinflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress

  • Mechanical ventilation: ARDS

  • Lung transplantation: role of inhaled cyclosporine

  • Sleep in the ICU: impact of light levels and impact on mortality

  • Lung epithelial biology: role of prostaglandins

  • Outcomes research in critical care: sepsis, nutrition, sleep, transfusion medicine

  • Computer-assisted health care/drug utilization

  • Medical ethics

  • Lung cancer: genomics, proteomics, and the role of microRNAs

  • Mentored career development awards accessible to the University of Maryland include the individual K08 and K23 awards, the institutional K12 award, and a VA career development award. Our Division has access to a wealth of potential mentors and resources to support a transition to a faculty position.

Additionally, the Department of Epidemiology has established a K30-funded clinical research training program that offers a Masters in Clinical Research for those fellows interested in pursuing an additional degree.
