Solaiuman Alobaid’s kidney had been blocked since birth, which caused it to balloon in size. When his brother Yousef stepped up to be his living donor, there was yet another complication: Yousef’s donor kidney had three arteries, which would require reconstructive surgery in order to be transplanted.

His doctors in Saudi Arabia recommended he come to the U.S. for surgery. Once they arrived, the brothers were rejected from yet another hospital due to the complexity of their case. That’s when they found out about UMMC’s expertise in transplanting kidneys with multiple arteries, and made the decision to travel (yet again) to Baltimore.
