University of Maryland providers from several hospitals worked to save the life and aid the recovery of Doug Wetzel, who nearly died after sustaining severe heatstroke in a triathlon. He was initially taken to UM Shore Medical Center at Chestertown, where he was stabilized so that he could be flown to the University of Maryland Medical Center's Shock Trauma Center. At UMMC, a team of about 200 providers from critical care, Shock Trauma, transplantation, nephrology, surgery and hepatology all played a key role in Doug's survival, as his heatstroke led to organ failure.

Doug underwent successful liver transplant surgery, and he continues his recovery at UM Rehabilitation and Orthopaedic Institute, where he is doing physical and occupational therapy. Doctors and staff across different disciplines, from three UMMS hospitals all played a key role in Doug's survival.
