Orthopaedics Research Fellowship

The University of Maryland Department of Orthopaedics Research Fellowship provides extraordinary US medical students and medical school applicants with a unique early-career opportunity. This 12-month funded program is designed for students looking to gain clinical experience, mentorship, and research exposure.

Orthopaedic Research Fellowship Details

Research fellows will be involved in a variety of clinical studies, both prospective and retrospective, in design. Student will meet weekly for study updates and mentorship. Our department has exceptional clinical volume, and our research fellows are fully involved in the clinical pathway while recruiting and consenting study participants, reviewing clinical data, and collecting follow up information from patients.

Research fellows actively participate in the outpatient clinics within the department and have the opportunity to observe surgical procedures in the operating room. As part of the program, research fellows participant in morning rounds, weekly case presentation conferences, and orthopedic grand rounds.

Previous fellows have co-authored an average of 4-8 publications during their 12-months in the program, and have several abstracts presented at national conferences.

Prerequisites for application

While students may apply following the completion of a bachelor’s degree, preference will be given to applicants that have completed two or more years of medical school. Applicants must be in good academic standing and have an interest in pursuing a career in orthopedic surgery. The successful applicant will be responsible, motivated, independent, and research focused.

Stipend and benefits

Research fellows will receive a $30,000 stipend.
