A novel resuscitation unit ensuring that critically ill patients with time-sensitive emergencies at referring facilities are admitted to UMMC regardless of bed availability in the Neurocritical Care Unit.

UMMC's neurocritical care team works closely with our colleagues from neurosurgery, interventional neuroradiology, stroke neurology, epilepsy, and neuromuscular disease to diagnose and manage complicated neurocritical care patients.

Beyond physicians, our rounding team is comprised of a specialized neurocritical care pharmacist and nutritionist, and specialized neuroscience nurses. Our care is complemented by respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathology therapists, social workers, case managers and chaplains.

UMMC's Neurocritical Care Unit recognizes the unique stress that critical care places on patients and their families. We are committed to improving their experience by:

We use the latest advances in technology to monitor brain structure and function including CT scan, advanced MRI imaging, ultrasound, continuous EEG monitoring (available 24/7), cutting-edge hemodynamic monitoring, jugular venous oxygen saturation, measurement of intracranial pressure, direct measures of regional brain metabolism and oxygenation.

We prevent secondary brain injury with state-of-the-art targeted temperature management devices, medications, and interventional neuroradiology and neurosurgical interventions. We offer opportunities to take part in the latest ground-breaking research to improve the future of neurocritical care.

Post-Neurocritical Care Unit NeuroRecovery Clinic

We recognize that the effects of acute neurological illness do not end when patients leave the neurocritical care unit. Following brain injury, many patients are faced with long-lasting disabilities that require ongoing attention and care. We have established an outpatient NeuroRecovery Clinic to address follow-up concerns, aid in transitions of care, and provide a roadmap to recovery.
