Cardiologists at the University of Maryland Heart and Vascular Center treat adults and children for everything from common heart problems, such as arrhythmia, heart failure and high blood pressure (hypertension), to the most complex, like congenital heart disease or cancers affecting the heart (cardio-oncology).

Using innovative treatments and therapies, the cardiology team works with patients to diagnose heart issues and create individualized plans for treatment and long-term management of their conditions.

Minimally Invasive Heart Procedures

While some patients will need open-heart surgery, these new, innovative treatment and diagnostic technologies can result in less pain and a shorter recovery time for patients. They include:

• Interventional cardiology, which uses catheters to diagnose and treat heart diseases like coronary artery disease (CAD)
• Transplantable devices, such as pacemakers, to treat arrhythmia
• Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), a less invasive treatment for aortic stenosis

Serving Adult and Pediatric Cardiology Patients

The UM Heart and Vascular Center cares for people of all ages, from before birth through their senior years. Our commitment to preventive cardiology for adults means a focus on early detection through heart screenings and education about heart-healthy lifestyles. Our Women’s Heart Health Program focuses on the factors that are unique to women’s cardiac care needs to provide accurate diagnoses and effective prevention strategies. 

The Children’s Heart Program at the University of Maryland Children’s Hospital delivers compassionate care to children throughout Maryland in their own communities. When heart surgery is the recommendation for our youngest patients, they have shorter hospital stays than the national average.
