UMMC’s goals for youth in the community are to: 

  • Reduce violence in school-aged children
  • Introduce youth to jobs in health care
  • Increase student attendance and support career readiness 

Our partnerships with local schools and community programs create internships and mentorships.  Seminars and hospital tours allow hands-on exploration of careers in health care.  

Students gain work readiness skills through occupational skills training as a part of career and technology education programs. They receive professional development with experts in the field and are exposed to many healthcare careers.  

These partnerships help create an employment pipeline for new workers choosing a career in health care.

Summer Internships Through YouthWorks

UMMC’s summer internship program is held on an annual basis. During the designated enrollment period, students must complete a registration packet at youthworks.oedworks.com in order to be considered for our program.

To participate students must: 

  • Be Baltimore City residents between the ages of 16-21
  • Commit to and complete our 4-week virtual and in-person program with the required minimum of 125 hours of service

The program's three parts: 

  • Career Exploration Series - introduction to various careers within the medical system (medical and non-medical)
  • Leadership Development Training - weekly sessions that teach interpersonal and professional skills
  • Team Service Project -  working in teams with a community partner, designing a sustainable community project that addresses an issue in a community
