My decision to have the surgery came when:
My mother passed away at the age of 59 in 1980 with 3 progressive diseases. I was only 34 at the time, but as I reached my late 50s I had two out of three of those diseases and had gained much weight. I lived in fear as I approached my own 59th birthday. Two years later I couldn’t sleep or breathe very well. It got scary for me. I couldn’t catch my breath even during short walks. Knowing what happened to mom and on my doctor’s advice I decided to have the surgery.

My biggest surprise after the surgery was:
The weight came off so fast after surgery. I was shopping at thrift shops because I could only wear things for 2 months. My self-confidence improved as the weight came off. I have cut myself in half and I have loved every minute of it!

Conditions I had before the surgery that have now improved or disappeared:
My diabetes medication decreased from 3 types to one. My other medications for various issues were dropped. I don’t have edema. I don’t kneed oxygen and my sleep apnea is gone.

Advice for others considering the surgery:
It took me three years to decide to do this surgery because I wanted to know everything about it first. If you are determined to make it work, it will work. You have to stick to the program and go to the support groups. They really help. I was never one to sit down, talk to someone and voice my opinions. Now, I can’t stop. It was also helpful for me to tell everybody I was doing this. It helped keep me on track. I have done so well that my husband wants to do the surgery too.

The best part of the program at the University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital Bariatric Surgery was:
They worked with me on the insurance issues that came up and helped me get the right solution at the right time.
