Valerie's Victory

When a history of smoking and a persistent cough led Valerie to a CT scan, a spot was discovered on her lung. And because the results were inconclusive, she became a regular at UM Upper Chesapeake Health for routine monitoring and testing.

Fast forward four years and another CT scan showed that the spot had begun to change. A PET scan, followed by a biopsy, confirmed that Valerie had very early-stage lung cancer.

Valerie’s plan of care included surgery—a robotic-assisted segmentectomy—which removed the cancerous segment of her lung tissue. The procedure requires smaller incisions which means less pain, less blood loss and a faster recovery for patients. Thanks to the thoracic surgery team, including Kevin Dubree, PA-C and Dr. Shelby Stewart, Valerie was able to get the cutting-edge lung cancer treatment she needed, close to home.

Our caring team of experienced specialists are here to guide you through your lung cancer journey, from screening to diagnosis to surgery or other treatment. While regular appointments with the thoracic surgery team will continue for at least five years.

Valerie is now living cancer-free—and is back to doing what she loves.
