A History of Giving

St. Joseph Medical Center is fortunate to have many loyal friends and supporters. It is a little more difficult, however, to name donors who have never missed the opportunity to make an annual gift since the hospital opened in Towson in 1965. John and Eileen Schmidt are the happy exception. Married for 69 years, the Schmidts have a special affinity for St. Joseph. “My brother, Gordon Bautz, was instrumental in bringing St. Joe’s to Towson nearly 50 years ago,” says Eileen. “He and his wife, Marie, were so enthusiastic about everything ‘St. Joes’ that I just had to become a part of it. I started volunteering with Marie in the gift shop when it opened. I would still be there if I hadn’t started teaching second graders at Lutherville Elementary,” Eileen adds with a laugh.

John adds, “It’s hard to articulate how we feel about St. Joe’s. It has just always been special to us. It may seem unusual when talking about a hospital but the word ‘affection’ comes to mind. St. Joe’s is like a friend. We have been affiliated with St. Joe’s since it came to Towson and we’ve seen what a wonderful benefit it has been to our community.

“We have been here for St. Joseph and St. Joseph has always been here for us. It’s just a pleasure to be able to consistently support this wonderful institution,” Eileen and John both say with affection and enthusiasm.
