University of Maryland Medical Center at Dorchester is a 47-bed adult medical/surgical community hospital, providing 24-hour emergency services and inpatient services including medical, surgical, gynecological, orthopedic, acute rehabilitation, behavioral health and critical care. The hospital’s primary service area is Dorchester County; its secondary service area includes Caroline and Talbot counties. More than 17,000 visits to the Emergency Department are recorded every year.

University of Maryland Medical Center at Dorchester provides a full-array of diagnostic and therapeutic services, including same-day surgery and lab testing. Diagnostic imaging services include digital mammography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine as well as cardiovascular and pulmonary testing. 

In 2013, the completion of a $2.5 million dollar renovation and expansion of the hospital’s Shore Behavioral Health unit increased the number of beds from 16 to 24, enhancing its ability to meet the needs of patients who have mental health and substance abuse issues. 

UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester also offers a Center for Cardio-Pulmonary Fitness and Wellness, and a sleep testing facilities for overnight studies conducted by Shore Regional Health’s Sleep Center. 

Comprehensive rehabilitation services provided by UM Medical Center at Dorchester include the Balance Center, which offers the most advanced technology created for the evaluation and treatment of balance issues. Rehab therapists in the Balance Center assist patients recovering from a wide variety of illness and injury, including stroke, vestibular disorders, chronic imbalance, Parkinson’s, peripheral neuropathy, joint replacement, multiple sclerosis, and  Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), which is estimated to affect 50 percent of adults over age 70. Other rehabilitation services offered in Dorchester include speech, occupational and physical therapy.
