Our patients get a minimum of three hours per day of intensive therapy. Our therapy program, paired with 24/7 oversight, helps patients reduce their average inpatient stay to 14-16 days – about half as long as the average stay in a skilled nursing facility.*

High-Tech Stroke Rehabilitation Resources
The UM Rehab Institute has made significant investments in our facilities and technology to assist our patients as they recover. This allows us to provide support and care in a technologically advanced setting:
- Our on-site therapy gym houses a kitchen to reintroduce patients to cooking and kitchen safety skills.
- For patients working to improve their independent walking, we feature a Healing Garden with both level and uneven terrains.
- The advanced technology we provide includes: Vector, Lokomat, L300, H200, TIMS, VitalStim.
Assessments and Outings
To prepare for a patient's discharge from our inpatient care, a team of therapists and nurses may conduct on-site assessments of the patient's home. Based on their findings, the team provides specific recommendations to help the patient perform daily living skills and job functions.
Our team members may recommend an "independence day," where patients practice the skills learned during family training sessions in a controlled environment. We may also take patients on community re-entry outings that allow groups of patients to practice developing skills in real-world situations.
Outpatient Follow-Up Care for Stroke Recovery
After they leave our inpatient facility, patients continue their journey toward independence with our follow-up stroke recovery program. This may include:
- Medical evaluation and treatment
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Neuropsychology
