BALTIMORE – The Board of Trustees of Union Hospital has signed a management services agreement with the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). Union Hospital's Board and Management Team have been discussing different approaches to best provide for the health of the residents of Cecil County. The affiliation with UMMS will provide access to the quality improvement resources of a major academic center, improve local access to clinical services and move Union toward participation in a regional model of care.

The agreement includes the option to renew the management contract at the end of the 24-month term. During the 24-month term, the hospital retains full control over its financial and physical assets. The local Board of Directors remains responsible for Hospital governance.

The areas of strategic focus in the agreement designed to benefit the hospital and community are:

  • Enhancement and expansion of Union's oncology research program, offering additional treatment and clinical trial options to Union patients
  • Assistance in physician recruitment
  • Facilitation of quality improvement measures designed to enhance patient safety and satisfaction as well as develop staff skills
  • Reduction of Union’s supply chain expenses through the purchasing power of a major academic medical system

"As health care changes, hospitals are taking a more collaborative approach to improving local access to high quality, cost effective care. A formal relationship with the University of Maryland Medical System provides us with additional expertise and resources to better serve our community,” stated Kenneth Lewis, M.D., J.D., President and CEO of Union Hospital. In addition to this agreement with UMMS, Union also collaborates with Nemours Children's Hospital for pediatric program development and hospitalist support.

Union Hospital Parent Board Chairman, Martin Healy, said: "Union Hospital's mission is to provide safe, high-quality health and wellness services to the residents of Cecil County. Our agreement with the University of Maryland Medical System is a collaborative effort to maintain a local health care system. The relationship with UMMS is an exciting opportunity for everyone involved."

"We are delighted to be working with the team at Union Hospital and evaluating the parameters of our future relationship that represent the best business strategy long-term, while maximizing quality care, access and value for the patients served by Union," stated Robert Chrencik, President and Chief Executive Officer of UMMS.
