UMMS Board of Directors Announce New Chair, Vice Chair
BALTIMORE (June 12, 2019) – Today, the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) Board of Directors unanimously elected James C. “Chip” DiPaula, Jr. Chairman of the Board of Directors and The Honorable Judge Williams, Jr. Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. Both will assume responsibilities on July 1, and will continue to serve at the pleasure of the Board which will be reconstituted by January 1, 2020 in accordance with legislation passed in the 2019 legislative session.
“We regret the actions and poor decisions which have jeopardized confidence in the System, and are committed to adopting best practices for governance, management, and operations to earn the trust of our Maryland stakeholders. UMMS is a large and diverse system with a noble mission and we look forward to fulfilling our goal of providing world class health care in Maryland,” says DiPaula.
Williams adds, “We remain appreciative of the work of past Board leadership, as a lot has been accomplished, but there is much work to do. I look forward to focusing on the business of the University of Maryland Medical System and serving the health care needs of Maryland.”
Additional Board Actions:
Earlier this year, four members of the Board of Directors voluntarily separated themselves from the Board pending the Nygren review of business relationships to preserve the integrity of the review process. After reviewing the facts and circumstances presented in the Nygren report, the Board will welcome the return of those on leaves of absence. The Board members include The Honorable Francis X. Kelly, August J. Chiasera, Walter A. Tilley, Jr. and James A. Soltesz.
The business relationships for those Board members, August J. Chiasera, the Honorable Francis X. Kelly, Walter A. Tilley, Jr. and James A. Soltesz will be competitively bid under stringent guidelines.
