Vascular Health

The Vascular Center at UMMC Midtown Campus brings together a team of board-certified, University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty experts and specialized nurse practitioners to evaluate, diagnose and treat the full spectrum of vascular conditions.

Our staff work in partnership with  primary care providers, cardiologists, diabetes experts, podiatrists and nephrologists to provide individualized, patient-centered, comprehensive health care. We combine the most advanced diagnostic capabilities with the full range of treatment options for vascular disease.

The Center is a major teaching site for both the accredited UMMC Vascular Surgery Residency program and the University of Maryland Baltimore County Vascular Ultrasound technology program.

Vascular Lab

Diagnostic imaging services are available through the Non-Invasive Vascular Laboratory on the second floor of UMMC Midtown Campus from Monday–Friday from 7:30 am - 5 pm. To make an appointment or learn more about the services of this program, please call 410-225-8144.

What is Vascular Disease?

Vascular disease affects your body's blood vessels: the arteries and veins through which blood travels to the body's cells. When the body's blood vessels are not working as well as they should, the body's cells can't get all of the oxygen and nutrition they need to stay healthy.

Diseases Treated at the Vascular Center

There are several different types of vascular disease, depending on which arteries or veins are affected and what kind of problem the blood vessel is having. At the UMMC Midtown Vascular Center, we treat:

• Peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which is when fatty deposits build up in the body's extremities, particularly the legs
• Deep venous thrombosis (DVT), when clots block blood from flowing through the deeps vein, also typically in the legs
• Varicose veins, leg swelling, vein inflammation and venous insufficiency
• Aortic aneurysms (bulging in the aortic artery) and aortic dissections ( a tear in the aorta)
• Carotid artery disease, which is when the carotid arteries in the neck become narrowed reducing blood flow to the brain and raising the risk of stroke
• Renal artery disease, which affects blood supply to the kidneys
• Disease in the arteries of the abdomen that supply the intestines

Vascular Center Services

From office-based clinical evaluations to the most advanced, minimally-invasive surgery, the UMMC Midtown Vascular Center works with all the resources of this academic medical center to offer the full spectrum of medical and surgical services to patients with vascular disease of all varieties and severities, including:

• Initial clinical evaluations and consultations for vascular disease
• Expert second opinions for vascular conditions
• Dialysis access
• Investigational treatments for vascular disease
• Drug therapy for pain caused by too little blood flow to the legs or arms
• Compression therapy for chronic venous disorders
• Lifestyle changes, such as smoking cessation, exercise programs and cholesterol and diet management
• Non-invasive diagnostic tests such as ultrasound
• Treatment of lower extremity wounds or ulcers

The Limb Preservation Program

The Limb Preservation Program provides comprehensive care to treat and prevent conditions that can result in the loss of limbs. In this amputation prevention program, UMMC specialists in podiatry, vascular surgery and wound care work together to evaluate, diagnose and treat the full spectrum of vascular conditions that can lead to limb loss.

Patients have convenient access to multiple services on both the UMMC Midtown and Downtown Campuses.
