At the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, we offer education, improved patient safety and specialized expertise to help patients with diabetes and endocrine disorders live happy, healthy and active lives.

Clinics at the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology

In addition to diabetes care, the UMCDE offers the following endocrine clinics:

Thyroid Clinic

The thyroid clinic specializes in treating all thyroid disorders including hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. There is a dedicated ultrasound machine for diagnostic imaging and fellows will routinely perform fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies in the clinic, and a close working relationship with radiology, cytopathology and endocrine surgery is maintained.

Often patients are seen in conjunction with the endocrine surgeon, and cytopathologists are present at the bedside for FNAs. A multi-disciplinary thyroid conference involving surgery, nuclear medicine, endocrinology, pathology and radiology is held monthly to discuss challenging cases

Pituitary Clinic

This clinic specializes in the diagnosis, evaluation, and treatment of pituitary tumors and other disorders of the hypothalamus and pituitary. We take a multi-disciplinary approach with our colleagues in neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, and radiation oncology to provide timely diagnosis and treatments for our patients.

Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Clinics

Adult patients, at both UMMC, UMMC Midtown Campus and the Baltimore VA, seen in the metabolic bone clinics include those with osteoporosis, Paget disease of bone, renal osteodystrophy, parathyroid disorders, non-PTH mediated hypercalcemia, kidney stones, vitamin D disorders, osteogenesis imperfecta, hypophosphatemic rickets and oncogenic osteomalacia.

General Endocrine Clinic

Fellows see patients weekly in our general endocrine clinic. They routinely encounter patients with thyroid, bone, pituitary, adrenal, and reproductive disorders. The Baltimore VA also provides a weekly opportunity for fellows to manage a wide variety of endocrine disorders. Fellows are encouraged to take a primary role in management of their patients and to follow their patients throughout the course of their training.

Pediatric Endocrine Clinic

This clinic specializes in seeing children ages birth to 18 with diabetes and classical endocrine problems, including short stature, delayed or precocious puberty, thyroid disorders, disorders of bone metabolism. Fellows will work with pediatric endocrine attendings during these clinics.

Endocrine Diagnostic Testing Unit

Provides hormone tests (stimulation/suppression tests) to help diagnose and manage disorders of hormonal excess or deficiency.

Women's Health Clinic

This clinic specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of menstrual irregularities and hirsutism such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), primary ovarian insufficiency, and hypothalamic amenorrhea, to name a few.

Weight Management Clinic

Our weight management clinic specializes in the care of overweight and obese individuals, with or without diabetes, in medical, dietary and behavioral management. Close relations with the nutrition educators and the bariatric clinic at UMMC allow multi-disciplinary care of the patient.
