At University of Maryland Medical System, our goal is always to provide personalized care that is convenient and easily accessible. That's why so many of our providers see patients via telehealth.

Virtual visits — from your phone, computer or tablet — can be an option for new and current patients seeking urgent care and primary care or visits with specialists.

Telehealth for Specialty and Primary Care

During a virtual visit, you communicate with your provider via video using a link sent to you by email or text. Some of the services they can provide include:

  • Making a diagnosis
  • Prescribing medication
  • Reviewing lab and test results
  • Making medical recommendations
  • Referring you to a specialist

Making an Appointment for a Virtual Visit

Search our providers to choose one that offers telehealth or to confirm that your current provider does. Check the "Available for Virtual Visit" box before beginning your search.

  • Current patients with access to our patient portal, MyPortfolio, can use it to request a virtual visit or call the office directly.
  • New patients should contact the provider by phone. Search for a provider's contact information using Find a Doctor.
Note: Our providers cannot conduct telemedicine visits with patients located in a different state. If you live outside Maryland or will be out of state at the time of your appointment, please let your provider's office know before scheduling. 

When you schedule your telehealth visit, you will be asked to provide billing and insurance information as you would in an in-person visit. You can do this by phone or by using our patient portal MyPortfolio.

Whether you are a new or current patient, you will have the opportunity to create a MyPortfolio account before or after your visit. You can also use MyPortfolio’s eCheck-in to update your personal information, medications, health issues and insurance information, and pay your copay (charges processed when you arrive) in advance of your telemedicine visit.

How Telehealth Appointments Work

Immediately before your appointment, you will receive a text and or email that you open on the device that you plan to use for your visit. 

You simply click the link to get started! But you can always call the provider's office if you have any questions.

For the best experience, please make sure you are in a private and quiet area. The appointments are structured the same as in-person visits, except you don't have to be in the same room as your doctor.

Our providers have access to your medical records. Through an online doctor visit, a provider can do a medication check, review test results, evaluate how a treatment or therapy is working and see how you are breathing or moving, for example. If a prescription is needed, a provider can place an order electronically and send it to your pharmacy for pick-up.
