About Me

Dr. Gottlieb is a cardiologist. He is highly skilled and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with heart failure. He also specializes in the management of cardiac amyloidosis, a buildup of abnormal proteins (amyloids) in the tissues of the heart that affects its function.

Dr. Gottlieb has been working for over a decade to develop drugs for amyloidosis treatment. He is now investigating various types of new drugs with the potential to reverse the disease. In addition to cardiac amyloidosis, his special clinical interests include cardiorenal syndrome (disorders of the heart and kidneys) and congestive heart failure. He also evaluates sleep abnormalities and the interaction of physiology and psychology in heart failure patients.

Dr. Gottlieb has been at University of Maryland School of Medicine since 1988 and is currently professor of medicine and director of the Clinical Research Program in Cardiology.

Research and Publications

Dr. Gottlieb’s research centers on the physiology and therapy of congestive heart failure. This includes a particular interest in neurohormonal activation and renal function in CHF patients.

Having studied the impact of adenosine antagonists and other medications and interventions on renal function and the physiology of renal function in heart failure patients, Dr. Gottlieb is interested in the interaction of heart failure and renal dysfunction. He investigates new therapies and is currently working on new inotropes, vasodilators and devices. He was the United States' principal investigator for the groundbreaking MERIT-HF evaluation of beta blockers.

Dr. Gottlieb has published about the interaction of depression and heart failure. In addition, he has investigated the effects of home telemonitoring, sleep abnormalities and genetic polymorphisms in heart failure patients.
