Dr. Mohindra was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Radiation Oncology by Baltimore magazine in 2020.
Dr. Mohindra joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in July 2014 as an Assistant Professor in a clinician-scientist role. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Radiation Oncology in July 2019 and currently acts as a Radiation Oncologist at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Maryland Proton Treatment Center. Prior to that, he completed two radiation oncology residencies (India and U.S.A), a head-neck cancer clinical fellowship (Canada) and a fellowship as a post-doctoral global academic research associate (U.S.A).
His primary area of clinical and research interest is in the lung/thoracic, gynecological and hemato-lymphoid cancers. Dr. Mohindra played a key role in the initiation of the department's MRI-guided internal radiation (brachytherapy) program for women with cervical cancer. He has helped establish the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) as a referral center for brachytherapy for complex gynecological cancers. He is currently working on expanding the use of modern technologies like proton beam therapy for the management of thoracic/lung, gynecological and hemato-lymphoid malignancies. He is an active participant of the multi-disciplinary clinics at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center for thoracic, gynecological and hemato-lymphoid programs.
He is actively involved in several collaborative research evaluating treatment outcomes through institutional and population-based databases, development of early phase clinical trials evaluating both radiation sensitizers and radiation toxicity mitigators or evaluation of modern radiation techniques including proton beam therapy for the management of thoracic/lung, gynecological and hemato-lymphoid malignancies. He serves as national PI of two NCI-sponsored multi-institutional phase-I clinical trials (NCT02589522 and NCT02993146), Radiation Oncology Co-chair for the A041501A study and Alliance Champion for the NRG-sponsored national study: LU002.
He has received several academic excellence, research and travel awards including the 2014 Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Roentgen Resident/Fellow Award for outstanding radiologic research and the 2014 American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Resident Digital Poster Discussion Award in the Biology category. At UMSOM, he received Medical Student Research Day Mentor Recognition Award - Transformational Impact in 2017 and 2020, and ARRO Educator of the Year Award, Radiation Oncology in 2020.
Dr. Mohindra has active participation in key roles within many national and international societies. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology. His national leadership roles include Member Executive Committee and Member Board of Directors of the Alliance for Clinical Trials in Oncology, Vice-chair of the International Committee of the American Brachytherapy Society and Chair of the Workforce Sub-Committee of American Society for Radiation Oncology. Dr. Mohindra directs and leads the Gynecologic disease site in the Annual University of Maryland Mock Orals Course in Radiation Oncology to help young attendings prepare for Board Certification Exams and chairs the thoracic section of the national American College of Radiology Radiation Oncology In-Training (TXITTM) Exam.
Within the Department of Radiation Oncology, UM School of Medicine, Dr. Mohindra is the Director of Research Internships and Medical Student Clerkship Director. He has mentored medical students and residents on research projects that have led to national awards. He is the Director of Billing and Compliance for the Department of Radiation Oncology and is also the Lead, Scope of Practice, Policy and Procedure Management Workgroup of Quality and Safety Review Council.
