About Me

Dr. Crane is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hip and knee joint replacement surgery. He has special interests in hip and knee arthritis treatment and the diagnosis and treatment of painful and failed hip and knee replacements.

Passionate about patient education, Dr. Crane has worked with his team to develop a pre-operation class and educational materials to help patients prepare for surgery. He feels that all reasonable non-surgical options should be explored before surgery is considered. He and his team treat patients like family and look forward to helping all patients with their hip and knee problems.

Recruited to develop the hospital center for joint replacement, Dr. Crane joined the team at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center in 2012. He served as the chairman of Orthopedics from 2013 to 2022 and continues to serve as the director of the Joint Replacement Center. He also serves as associate chairman of Surgery. In addition, he is a participant in the University of Maryland Joint Replacement Network, which collaborates to create leading-edge technology and practices joint replacement for the entire University of Maryland system.

Dr. Crane completed his orthopaedics residency at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas, finishing in 1985 as chief resident. He studied under world famous orthopedist Dr. Charles Rockwood. He then underwent fellowship training in hip and knee replacement in Phoenix, Arizona. In 1986, he joined a private practice in Denver, Colorado, eventually becoming president of the group. He was a consulting physician for the NFL’s Denver Broncos, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche.

Dr. Crane founded the Rose Institute for Joint Replacement, which became one of the largest joint replacement centers in the HCA network of over 300 hospitals worldwide. He sat on the National Orthopedic Board of HCA and developed care plans and surgical efficiency practices for the HCA network. Since 2003, Dr. Crane has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

While in Texas, Dr. Crane met his wife of 42 years. He took up, and continues to perfect, the fine art of cooking Texas BBQ cooking. He is a father of three children and has 14 grandchildren.
