About Giora Netzer, MD, MSCE

Dr. Netzer serves as Vice President of Patient Experience. He joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine faculty in 2006, and is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology.

He received his B.A. in art history from Vassar College before attending Temple University School of Medicine. His training in medicine, pulmonary and critical care was completed at the University of Pennsylvania, where he also received a master’s degree in clinical epidemiology. His research and advocacy for patients and families, both in the acute care setting and afterward, inform his work in Patient Experience. This body of work includes approximately 100 peer-reviewed publications and a dozen book chapters, and creating the first definitive overview of its type, Families in the ICU: A Guide to Understanding, Engaging, and Supporting at the Bedside, a book on Springer Press.

Dr. Netzer’s leadership in the field is reflected by his national speaking and recognition from national critical care societies. He has served on leadership committees for the American Thoracic Society, and has received a Recognition Award and been chosen for the Leadership Development Program by the American College of Chest Physicians. As a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, he is a two-time recipient of its Presidential Citation, served on its Thrive taskforce for improving outcomes after critical illness, and co-authored its guidelines on family-centered care.
