LA PLATA, Md. — The Charles Regional Medical Center Foundation is pleased to announce a major gift from a local family. Earlier this year, Julie and Bill Dotson stepped forward with a six-figure pledge to the foundation and designated the contribution to a special project being planned for the region.

As a result of their philanthropic generosity, the Julie and Bill Dotson Center for Breast Health will become a reality in 2018. The center will be located on Washington Avenue in the La Plata Commerce Center, which is currently home to several other University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center services including rehabilitation, imaging and a community physician practice.

Their gift was formally announced at the foundation’s 20th Annual Autumn Wine Tasting in September. The Dotsons and members of their family were also guests at the 10th Annual Breast Cancer Luncheon in October, where their donation was announced to that audience of survivors, support groups and other community members.

“The foundation could not be more pleased and humbled by this tremendous commitment from the Dotsons,” said Susan Mudd Vogel, the foundation’s executive director.

Vogel also shared that Noel Cervino, UM Charles Regional President and CEO, and Carole Lewis, the foundation’s former chairman, were instrumental in facilitating the gift.

Bill Dotson told the foundation that he considers himself fortunate to be able to give back to the community.

“Julie and I are so proud and blessed to be able to support UM Charles Regional in this way and know that many families will benefit from this new service in Charles County and neighboring areas,” Bill Dotson said.

The new center will be adjacent to the outpatient center for UM Charles Regional Imaging, which provides state-of-the-art mammography services.

“We believe the location is ideally situated for patients to receive a wide range of breast health care services,” said Chief Medical Officer Joseph D. Moser, M.D., “and we are grateful to the Dotsons for their investment, and for helping to bring these important services to our region.”

According to Paul Blackwood, Vice President of Planning at UM Charles Regional, the new Julie and Bill Dotson Center for Breast Health will be one of several within the University of Maryland Medical System.

“We’ve made some site visits and intend to bring best practices for breast health here to our community,” said Blackwood.

As Medical Director for the new facility, surgeon Eleanor Faherty, M.D., will lead treatment efforts with regard to every aspect of patient care.

“I could not be more pleased to be a part of this new center,” said Faherty, “and I know it will be a valuable resource to our region for a long time.”
