Why is UMMS prohibiting visitors?

To help protect our patients, staff and visitors, we have modified our enhanced patient safety policy to prohibit visitors at this time. Exceptions to this policy may be made for neonatal ICU (NICU), pediatric, and obstetric units as well as for extenuating circumstances, including those receiving end-of-life care. Please see our Temporary Visitor Restrictions for details about these exceptions. We understand this is a difficult time for our community and we are continuing to remain vigilant and work with local, state and federal partners to keep patients and health care workers safe.

How can I communicate and get information on my loved one if I am unable to visit?

We understand staying in touch is important and we will do everything we can to keep you updated on the status of your loved one. We encourage you to stay in touch directly via phone, laptops and tablets, when possible.

I've recently visited an UMMS hospital. How do I know if I've been exposed to COVID- 19?

We are taking the needed and recommended steps from our local, state and national partners like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to keep our patients, visitors and staff safe. The best thing you can do to protect yourself is to frequently wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

My loved one is currently a Patient Under Investigation (PUI) and we are awaiting confirmation to see if he/she has COVID-19. Can we still visit?

Out of an abundance of caution, we are not allowing any visitors at this time, with those few exceptions outlined in the policy. We encourage you to use phones, laptops and tablets to stay connected and will help in any way we can.

How long will these changes in the visiting policy be in effect?

Because this is a rapidly changing situation, we cannot predict how long these restrictions will remain in place. We will maintain them as long as necessary to protect our patients, visitors and staff. Please see our Temporary Visitor Restrictions or our social media sites for the most up-to-date information.
