Urogynecology focuses on disorders of the pelvic floor, a rarely talked about but very important complex of muscles and tissues which most people – especially women – don’t realize they even have! In women, the pelvic floor is essential to keeping all the lower abdominal and reproductive organs in place: bladder, urethra, vagina, uterus, even the rectum. As we age, or after childbirth, the pelvic floor can start to weaken, resulting in any number of issues that affect your quality of life, from releasing urine or fecal matter when you laugh to your uterus descending into your vagina.
Because it is such a personal subject, women are very hesitant to talk about it even to their doctors! Many don’t realize that pelvic floor disorders are common since we don’t talk about it. So women suffer in silence.
At UM Capital Region Health Medical Group – Gynecology, we don’t want any woman to give up their quality of life because they are too embarrassed to talk about a very common – and curable – issue.
We have built our Urogynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery practice around creating a safe and welcoming environment for women to talk in private with a specialist who is dedicated to listening and offering help. Our program is offers a unique, multidisciplinary program that starts with the expertise of specialist focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders. Then we add in advanced practitioners and physical therapists who are trained in managing those disorders and, when needed, surgical and non-surgical techniques to help women return to their normal life.
Pelvic floor disorders generally fall into one of four categories:
We are experts in diagnosing and treating all these issues. Pelvic floor disorders don’t have to be suffered in silence. Urogynecology combines female urology, gynecology and colorectal surgery to diagnose and treat these debilitating conditions to help patients regain their quality of life.
