Although often associated with bone cancer, sarcomas can also develop in the muscles, tendons, cartilage, fat, blood vessels and other soft tissues throughout the body.

With more than 70 distinct subtypes, sarcomas require precise diagnosis and a personalized treatment approach.

At UM Capital Region Health,  our cancer team provides advanced diagnostic techniques close to home in Prince George’s County. We analyze the molecular make-up of sarcomas and map the genomes of cancer cells. This allows us to identify the specific subtype and determine the most effective treatment options for each patient.

Sarcoma Symptoms

Symptoms of sarcoma can be subtle at the beginning. And sometimes they are mistaken for sports injuries. Symptoms include:

• A noticeable lump or swelling that is usually painless initially but grows over time
• Limited range of motion in the affected area
• Skin changes or bruising 
• Increased pain in the area
• Persistent bone pain
• Swelling or tenderness 
• Unexplained fractures

Our approach brings together several types of treatment.

Surgery

Our cancer surgeon removes tumors using advanced techniques that can spare limbs. Reconstructive surgery, when appropriate, can help restore appearance and function.

Our center’s technological advantages include imaging capabilities with dedicated radiologists, surgical planning systems, and specialized navigation tools. We use hybrid operating rooms that combine surgical and imaging capabilities, enabling real-time guidance during complex procedures.

Radiation Therapy 

Surgery is complemented by advanced, targeted radiation therapy, using state-of-the-art technology, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and proton therapy for precise tumor targeting while minimizing damage to healthy tissues. 

Chemotherapy 

In chemotherapy, medications are used to destroy cancer cells. These medicines are often, but not always, delivered by infusion. Our medical oncologists offer chemotherapy tailored to specific sarcoma subtypes. 

Support for Cancer Patients

Beyond medical treatment for sarcoma, we prioritize supportive care through dedicated nurse navigators and other support services. Our whole-person approach addresses not just the cancer itself, but the entire patient experience.
