At UM Capital Region Health, all bariatric procedures are planned laparoscopic surgical procedures. Laparoscopic means your surgeon will make 4 - 5 small openings in your abdomen. Surgical instruments are used to complete your surgery without making long incisions. This method results in reduced healing time and minimizes the potential for post operative complications. In rare occasions, your surgeon may decide to convert to an open method if it is deemed medically necessary for the patient.
