Coronavirus molecules

Patients who have been in the Intensive Care Unit with pulmonary conditions and those hospitalized with COVID-19 need coordinated care after discharge to recover as quickly as possible.

The experts at the Lung Center at UM BWMC consist of both outpatient and inpatient pulmonary and critical care providers. Through the center’s COVID Recovery Clinic, providers follow patients from the ICU or COVID bed to post-recovery care seamlessly. This process provides patients with easier transitions to home and back to normal with the assistance of our transitional care nurses and outpatient providers.

To participate in the clinic, patients must have been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit at UM BWMC and receive a referral from one of their ICU care providers.

Recovering from COVID

The COVID Recovery Clinic helps patients suffering from long-term effects of COVID-19 after receiving treatment in UM BWMC’s ICU.

Pulmonary and critical care providers evaluate patients in the clinic for ongoing oxygen needs, lung function, chronic health conditions, behavioral health concerns and socioeconomic needs. The team then develops customized care plans based on evaluation results.

If patients’ lungs are still not working as they should, providers may refer them to the medical center’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation program – a medically-based exercise and education program designed for patients with chronic lung conditions. Certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the program includes weekly exercise sessions that help patients decrease shortness of breath symptoms and develop strategies for an active lifestyle.

COVID Recovery Clinic providers also work closely with primary care physicians to coordinate any needed subspecialty care.

A patient’s first clinic appointment lasts about an hour. Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled as needed.
