As part of the University of Maryland Medical System/University of Maryland Baltimore's response to COVID-19, and in coordination with Johns Hopkins Health System, UMMS has canceled all elective surgeries and routine, non-urgent appointments at all UMMS medical facilities for two weeks.

Our priority continues to be the safety and protection of our patients and our employees. This decision was made with great care and with an abundance of caution to ensure that UMMS medical facilities have the necessary capacity to treat patients infected with COVID-19.

By delaying non-urgent procedures and appointments, UMMS will also decrease the number of people entering our clinical facilities who may unknowingly be carrying the disease, thereby limiting the community spread of the virus.

This policy will be re-evaluated weekly, and any changes to it will be promptly communicated to affected patients and posted on this page.

How does delaying these surgeries and appointments help UMMS respond to COVID-19?

This policy allows UMMS to respond more effectively to the increasing patient demands anticipated from COVID-19 by:

  • freeing treatment spaces and hospital rooms for COVID-19 patients
  • decreasing risk of staff and other patients' exposure to COVID-19
  • limiting the community spread of the virus
  • minimizing risk of surgical patients exposure to COVID-19
  • minimizing use of critical medical supplies and equipment that can be redirected to COVID-19 patients

How are patients being notified?

Whenever possible, the attending surgeon or provider will notify the patient of their delayed surgery or appointment. When this is not possible, another member of their clinical team will contact you.


Elective Surgery

How are we determining what surgeries are elective or non-urgent?

We are using an established set of criteria to evaluate which surgeries can safely be rescheduled. The criteria include considerations such as if a delay would cause serious harm to a patient and what supplies and level of care are needed following the surgery.

What is the process for rescheduling?

Our clinical teams will work closely with the patient to reschedule the procedure or surgery as soon as possible after the COVID-19 situation has subsided, no sooner than 90 days from the original appointment.

How long will the Elective Surgery Policy be in effect?

The policy will be put into effect in two-week increments. The first implementation will be in place until Wednesday, April 1. The policy will be evaluated weekly based on the current environment, taking into consideration the risk level and treatment needs for COVID-19 patients.


Routine Appointments

How are we determining what appointments are routine?

Routine appointments include those that are not urgent, such as:

  • Annual wellness visits
  • Routine follow-up visits
  • Visits that do not require face-to-face interaction

How long will the Routine Appointments Policy be in effect?

The policy will be put into effect in two-week increments. The first implementation will be in place beginning on March 19 until Friday, April 3. The policy will be evaluated weekly based on the current environment, taking into consideration the risk level and treatment needs for COVID-19 patients.
