UCH partnered with the University of Maryland Medical System in July 2009 in order to continue its commitment to provide this growing community with expanded clinical services, programs and facilities and to enhance recruitment of physicians to the area.

Oncology

The Cancer Programs at Harford Memorial Hospital and Upper Chesapeake Medical Center have both received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons' Commission on Cancer (CoC). UCMC was accredited as a Comprehensive Cancer Center and HMH as a Community Cancer Center. In addition, UCH provides free navigator and supportive care services to individuals living with cancer through its Cancer LifeNet Program.

Cardiovascular

The care received at the Upper Chesapeake Cardiovascular Institute rivals that of any in the Mid-Atlantic region. The Upper Chesapeake Cardiovascular Institute offers a variety of state-of-the-art services and programs including an all-digital cardiac catheterization lab, emergency cardiac angioplasty, cardiac rehabilitation, CT angiography, accredited cardiac and vascular ultrasound services, carotid angioplasty and stenting, and aneurysm repair. Upper Chesapeake Medical Center and Harford Memorial Hospital are designated Primary Stroke Centers by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services System (MIEMSS).

Orthopedics and Spine

Some of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the region perform full and partial joint replacements, minimally invasive hip and knee procedures, hand repair, RCL repair, spine, and other progressive procedures. The award-winning Joint Center at Harford Memorial Hospital offers a unique team approach to joint replacement surgery that promotes healing and gets patients back to a more active lifestyle. Our expert team of board certified orthopedic surgeons, nurses and rehabilitative professionals use a wellness patient-focused approach.

The Family Birthplace

The Family Birthplace offers a comprehensive range of services from delivery to postnatal care. Features of the Family Birthplace include a Level II Nursery, three triage rooms and an OR suite, a three-bed antenatal testing area, high-risk OB consults and testing, and 24-hour anesthesia and pediatrician coverage. Located on the UCMC campus, the program offers a comprehensive list of expectant parent classes; follow up home care visits and breastfeeding consultation by lactation experts including a "warmline" available for mothers with questions about breastfeeding.

Bariatric Surgery

Upper Chesapeake Bariatric Surgery is a patient-focused and compassionate center for individuals considering weight loss surgery. It has been designated as a Center of Excellence by the American College of Surgeons.

Diabetes and Endocrine Center

At the Diabetes and Endocrine Center located on the UCMC campus uses a team approach to diabetes education and management brings together Endocrinologists, Certified Diabetes Educators, Primary Care Physicians, and other appropriate specialists. The Center for Wound Care at Harford Memorial Hospital offers award-winning specialty care for diabetics with problem wounds.

Emergency Medicine

Upper Chesapeake Medical Center has a state-of-the-art Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) that includes physicians who are board certified in pediatric medicine and nurses who are specially trained in pediatric care. There is a hospital pediatrician on staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Recent Expansion

• Upper Chesapeake Medical Center -- A recently completed $39 million expansion project includes renovations to the emergency department; a new critical care unit; five additional obstetric beds and 26 medical/surgical beds; and $20 million in construction of a new parking garage and an outpatient facility called Physicians Pavilion II.
• Harford Memorial Hospital -- In response to unprecedented growth in patient volumes, the hospital opened a new 10-bed cardiac unit in 2008. Part of a recently completed $7 million renovation, the new unit provides additional inpatient beds, while also responding to a growing need for 24/7 cardiac monitoring.

Recent Clinical/Programmatic Developments

• In 2008, Upper Chesapeake Medical Center (UCMC) received state approval to perform emergency cardiac angioplasty in its state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab. In addition, the Cancer Programs at both Harford Memorial Hospital and UCMC have received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons.
