A Look at Chester River Health System

Chester River Health System was formed in 1997 to offer state-of-the-art health care to the residents of Kent and Queen Anne’s counties. Chester River Health System includes Chester River Hospital Center, Chester River Home Care & Hospice and Chester River Manor.

Chester River Hospital Center, which was established in 1935 as Kent & Queen Anne’s Hospital, is an acute care community hospital which provides inpatient medical services, 24-hour emergency care, surgical services, outpatient diagnostic services, rehabilitation services, maternity/birthing suites and oncology services.

The Emergency Department, which is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, consists of 11 beds and includes a general treatment area, a cardiac care room, a minor surgical station, a gynecological treatment room, an orthopaedic/cast room and a behavioral health room to treat a growing number of emergency patients. Helicopter transport is available when more advanced medical treatment is necessary.

The surgical services suite includes two operating rooms, a special procedures room, a same-day surgery unit and a post-anesthesia care unit. Patients begin their surgical experience with a nursing assessment in the Pre-Registration and Educational Program (PREP). Surgical services include colon-rectal, general, gynecological, ophthalmology, oral, orthopaedic, otolaryngology, podiatry, thoracic, urology and vascular procedures.

Cardiac diagnostic services include diagnostic cardiac catheterization, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), electrocardiograms (EKGs), cardiac monitoring, regular and nuclear cardiac stress testing, regular and stress echocardiography (ECHO), pacemaker evaluation and electroencephalograms (EEGs).

Pulmonary diagnostic services include pulmonary function testing, arterial blood gas analysis and pulse oximetry. Respiratory care provides therapeutic gas administration, aerosol and humidity therapy, pulmonary chest physiotherapy, intermittent positive pressure breathing therapy and incentive spirometry, as well as mechanical ventilator support, non-invasive bi-level pressure ventilation and endotracheal intubation.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation offers Phase I, II, III and IV cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation services, and is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Chester River Home Care & Hospice provides care for patients in their own homes under the direction of a physician and supervision of a registered nurse. Chester River Home Care & Hospice provides skilled nursing, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, intravenous therapy, personal care, medical social work, hospice and outreach services.

Chester River Manor is a comprehensive health care facility providing skilled and intermediate care and rehabilitation services. The 98-bed facility offers a full range of services and therapies designed to help residents reach and maintain the highest level of well-being and quality of life.
