Baltimore Washington Medical Center (BWMC) is a 311-bed comprehensive medical center caring for families in and around the Baltimore Washington corridor. It provides a range of clinical services, including cancer, cardiac, critical, diabetes, emergency, geriatric, orthopedic, pediatric, psychiatric, surgical, vascular and wound care.
In March 2007, BWMC was named one of the nation's 100 Top Hospitals® by Thomson Reuters. BWMC was the only hospital in Maryland and the District of Columbia to receive this award, which recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, financial performance, efficiency and growth in patient volume.
The Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the state, treating more than 90,000 patients a year. The department features 69 treatment rooms, a designated pediatric care area, a designated psychiatric care area and InstaCare, a model of care that has resulted in shorter wait times and improved patient satisfaction.
More than 20 percent of the people admitted to BWMC need cardiac care. The medical center provides sophisticated diagnostic services and treatment in its cardiac catheterization laboratories and coronary care unit, as well as through its busy cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program.
BWMC provides complete care before, during, and after surgery for patients who need total joint replacement through the Joint Replacement Center, while The Spine and Pain Center uses minimally invasive techniques and pain management therapies to provide comprehensive spine care.
The Maryland Vascular Center at BWMC combines the most advanced diagnostic capabilities with a full range of treatment options for vascular conditions, as well as arterial and venous diseases and renovascular hypertension. It also offers renal and endovascular therapy, as well as surgical and non-surgical treatments for varicose veins.
BMWC provides diabetes care through the Joslin Diabetes Center to meet the growing needs of area residents and to equip them with the knowledge to manage their disease effectively.
BWMC reaches close to 390,000 people a year through its community outreach programs, including lectures, health fairs, walking programs, screenings and other events held throughout the region. Its storefront at Arundel Mills mall also provides information and screenings.
